Be Truthful

Miss Cindy

Well, would you please raise your hand if you've ever told a lie. Raise your hand, okay y'all. Raise your hand if you've ever told a lie. We all have told a lie but this month in our orange curriculum we're learning about that when we tell lies we get all tangled up. So, I'm going to see, John Paul can you help me do something? Oh, you're going to love this honey. You're going to love it. I want you to take this rope and Mr. Mike is going to help us in a story that we've got, and every time he tells a lie you're going to wrap the rope around him. So, Mr. Mike…They say, every time a lawyer’s mouth moves that they are… (Laughter)

Mr. Mike/Mikey

I wondered why you chose me for this.

Miss Cindy

So, I'll tell you when to wrap the line around him. This is a story. We're going to pretend that he's not 'Mr. Mike' the mighty and high lawyer; he is little Mikey. So, now he's a little boy. And I want to tell you the story and Mrs. Rachel is going to help us too. The pool in Mike's neighborhood was opening today and Mikey was so excited. He hadn't gotten to spend much time in a pool before and he was ready to take swimming lessons and learn how to swim so he could have a great summer.

Mrs. Rachel

Look Mikey! Mikey! There are some boys your age. Go play with them and make friends but remember stay on the shallow end because you don't know how to swim.

Mr. Mike/Mikey

Okay.

Miss Cindy

He slowly walked down the steps into the pool and made his way over to them. He could barely touch the bottom of the pool. He was so short! He noticed the other boys were all treading water. He hadn't quite gotten the hang of that so he grabbed onto the side of the pool and pulled his legs up so he would feel more like the other kids.

Mr. Mike/Mikey

Hi!

Miss Cindy

Y'all say hi!

Small child

Hi! Are you a good swimmer?

Mr. Mike/Mikey

Sure!

Miss Cindy

Okay laugh it around, because he's not a good swimmer, remember?

Small child

Let's race!

Mr. Mike/Mikey

Oh, I just ate so I probably shouldn't.

Miss Cindy

He hadn't eaten in hours but he couldn't let the other people think that he couldn't swim. Marco decided to race Bryce instead and the other boys all cheered them on.

Small child

Hey, can you do a flip underwater?

Mr. Mike/Mikey

Of course I can! Well, I kind of hurt my arm today. I don't think I could do it right now.

Small child

I think your lying and you don't need to use your arm to do an underwater flip.

Mr. Mike/Mikey

No, I'm not lying! I'm a really good swimmer. I'll show you next time.

[Background talk] Small child

Yeah! Jump off the diving board!

[Background talk] Miss Cindy

What was little Mikey going to do? He told so many lies and he wasn't sure how to get out of this. If he jumped would he drown? Surely the lifeguard wouldn't let him drown, right? It couldn't be that hard, right?

Mr. Mike/Mikey

Okay, no problem. I've done it thousands of times.

Miss Cindy

Little Mikey slowly pulled himself out of the pool and walked over to the diving board. He started to climb the ladder with shaky legs when he heard this voice say…

Mrs. Rachel

Mikey! Mikey! Mikey! What do you think you're doing? You know you can't swim! What are you thinking?

Mr. Mike/Mikey

I don't know mom. These boys are all good swimmers and I wanted to be like them.

Mrs. Rachel

Maybe someday you can but if you drown you'll never get the chance.

Miss Cindy

Little Mikey looked up to see all of the other boys walking towards him. Uh oh! Were they going to make fun of him?

Small child

Hey dude why didn't you tell us you can't swim? What you just did wasn't very smart. You could have drowned. I shouldn't have told you to jump off the diving board. That wasn't very smart either when I wasn't sure you could swim.

Mr. Mike/Mikey

Well, I shouldn't have lied to you. I could have gotten hurt, and I could have gotten others hurt too trying to save me.

Small child

That's okay. We all mess up sometimes. Hey, let's get back in the pool and we'll give you some tips to get you started until you can take some swimming lessons.

Miss Cindy

The other boys all ran off. Little mister Mikey looked at his mom. She smiled and said…

Mrs. Rachel

Now remember Mikey that Bible verse that you learned last Sunday at Sunday school? From Psalm 119 verse 29 "Keep me from cheating and telling lies." Now remember a lie is going to trip you up. Now, maybe you might get over there and have some fun swimming in that shallow end and remember every time those lies come out it's going to trip you up.

Mr. Mike/Mikey

Okay mommy.

Miss Cindy

Thank you. Thank you Mr. Mikey and thank you mom. But, you see what happens when you tell one lie: then you have to tell another lie, and another lie, and you get all tied up just like little Mr. Mikey got tied up.

Mr. Mike/Mikey

I'm like a May Pole.

Miss Cindy

Thank you for getting him untangled, and that's what our lessons this week or this month are all about; is that we need to be truthful. Does anybody want to pray for us that maybe we can be truthful this week? Would you do it?

Small child

Please help us be truthful with all of our sins and help everyone with what they need. Please make us move forward, don't let us make some noise. Amen.
